02PRO – Pre-Shoot Preperation

Getting to Set on Time

There is a saying regarding set work, ?if you are early, you?re on time. If you?re on time, you?re late. If you?re late, you?re fired.? There is a lot to be taken from this statement. Crew breakfast is usually available in the hours before filming starts. Getting to set early allows time to eat and get coffee but more importantly it?s time to gauge how the day may go. Did the plans from the night before change due to weather? Did the director work on new boards or re-write the 3rd act the night before? Hopefully not. Either way before the work day starts, the heads of departments will be meeting before official call (generally on the set), to go over the day and what shots are up first. By being there early you will be able to be privy to these conversations and provide input as needed. This is a good time to listen and then instruct your crew to prepare anything you need for a successful shoot.
